Project Highlights

Learning is Life

Mobile App/Portal for Chemical Operators

Project Summary:

In this project I designed the program such that xAPIs used  to improve a client’s ability to train its incoming workforce. The client was a chemical manufacturing company with multiple plant locations. The company was experiencing a great deal of turnover, and as experienced operators retired, new operators needed to be quickly trained.

The situation was complicated by the fact that the company had aging equipment that frequently needed repairs. Current operator training was conducted “on the job,” along with some instructor-led training, and a series of technical videos. Operations checklists and procedures were paper-based, but a new automated system for work orders had been introduced. This system included tablet devices for operators.

The client asked to address two challenges:

  1. Provide operators with effective training and resources to make their jobs easier to perform.

  2. Improve the consistency and speed of repairs to aging equipment.

Solution:

Combination of videos, checklists, and other resources, all housed in a mobile portal:

  • Videos: Onboarding, mobile portal tutorial, multiple tutorials for operators and equipment support

  • Resources: PDFs, checklists, procedures, forms, Work Order system integration, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Fatality Prevention

Project Summary:

A centralized Health Environmental and Safety (HES) group required support in communicating the results of an internal Fatality Prevention study and engaging the enterprise with planned global initiatives to reduce fatalities.

Challenges:

  • The audience is diverse in experience and dispersed globally.

  • The audience is overworked and resistant to new initiatives from the HES function.

  • The study is complex, detailed, and tailored to an audience fluent in HES technical concepts.

Solution:

  • Reviewed existing materials and interviewed Fatality Prevention team members.

  • Developed key strategic messages and developed custom supporting graphics.

  • Created a storyline and developed a custom animation that could be distributed globally to establish a baseline understanding of the findings and outcomes of the Fatality Prevention study.

  • Coordinated efforts to equip the client team with additional tools and graphic resources to support the communications plan.

  • Worked with global BUs to translate the animation to local languages.

Value Added:

  • The client reported excellent feedback from global leaders and audiences that the messages were clear and powerfully presented.

  • The client continues to use the graphics and key messages developed for this project as a basis for ongoing communications.

  • Additional, follow on animations have been requested to communicate related HES efforts / initiatives.

Critical Sales Skills

Project Summary:

The client trains sales teams by implementing proven sales training and sales consulting solutions that are customized to the challenges and culture of each organization.

They have several instructor-led training programs they have been using in their training. They would like to create a corresponding digital solution they can potentially offer as a subscription to their clients.

Solution:

Develop digital learning programs. Each learning program should be:

  • Crisp and clean

  • Branded

  • Professionally narrated

  • Interactive and engaging

  • SCORM compliant

Each program will be designed based on the blended learning theory. The programs should be available for each client on a custom page, hence an LMS is needed – each client should only be able to access their courses.

Proposed learning design

eLearning Design Document - Example

Every learning project should have a well thought-out design. As Instructional Designers, we capture this design in what we call a Design Document. This document should include project information, business case, audience details, competencies, learning objectives, deliverables, etc. Here's an example for an eLearning course.
